Maja Smrekar (b. 1978) works in the fields of intermedia art, hybrid art, performance, installation and video. She graduated in sculpture in collaboration with Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana and received her master's degree in video and new media art, both at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. She taught at the ITMO University in St. Petersburg (2021), at the Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow (2020), at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (2020/21), at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade (2019), at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana (2018/19) and at the University of Art and Design in Linz (2018). Her recent solo shows include Optical Disorder at Tobačna Gallery 001, Ljubljana (2020), Opus et domus at the Click Festival, Helsingør (2018) and K-9_topology: Cynomorpha at the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz (2017). She has recently participated in group exhibitions at MAXXI, Rome (2021), Kunstlerhaus Wien, Vienna (2020) and Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing (2019). She was among the finalists for the Falling Walls Breakthrough of the Year (Berlin, 2020) and is the recipient of the Golden Nica, Prix Ars Electronica (2017) and the Prešeren Award (2018). Her work in the collections of Quo Artis Foundation, Barcelona, Museum of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana and Palazzo Taffini d'Acceglio, Savigliano, among other. Her work is published in BioArt: Altered Realities by Thames & Hudson (London, 2015). Maja Smrekar lives and works in Ljubljana.
